Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on the Council of State to be an effective and accountable advisory body to contribute to the “Resetting of Ghana” Agenda.

Speaking at the first official engagement with the Council of State during an orientation for its members, on Monday February 24 at Peduase Lodge, she urged the members to be active in their role, rather than a passive one.

According to the Vice President, a proactive advisory body will aid in dispelling unfounded claims questioning the existence of the Council of State.

“Respectfully, you must therefore endeavour to contribute to the shaping of governance policy and ensure that major policy choices are meticulously guided by the principles of accountability, equity and long-term interest. Your tenure must redefine the council’s role, transforming it from a passively advisory body to an active institution that can anticipate challenges, offers bold recommendations and demand accountability.

“This requires engaging proactively, addressing policy gaps, commissioning research and ensuring government discussions prioritise the public’s interest,” she advised.

She further highlighted the urgent need to review the 1992 Constitution to address the imbalance of power in the arms of government and challenges in local governance and  called on the members of the Council to draw from their experience and contribute effectively in reviewing the 1992 Constitution.
