Fort Lauderdale police investigate early morning shooting
Police are investigating an early morning shooting in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood that may have sent at least one person to the hospital, though that information has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. Monday in the area of SW 16th Street and SW 9th Avenue. CBS News Miami was first on the scene and observed a strong police presence as investigators canvassed the area for evidence.
Neighbors reported hearing gunfire shortly before dawn. A nearby resident told CBS News Miami that a group of teenagers had gathered in the area when apparently a fight broke out, followed by gunshots. One teen reportedly ran to the group claiming to have been shot, according to a witness.
Around the same time, an ambulance was seen arriving at a nearby hospital. While police have not confirmed a connection, the timing and location suggest it may be related to the shooting.
Fort Lauderdale police have not released official details on the number of victims or the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Witnesses at the scene described chaos, with clothing and a slipper left behind.
Investigators were seen walking the block, examining the street and front yards for evidence. It remains unclear whether the shooting took place inside or outside a home.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Fort Lauderdale Police Department as they work to determine what led to the violence.
