Playboi Carti Disputes First Week Numbers fo 'MUSIC'

Published 1 month ago2 minute read

Playboi Carti had some thoughts about the first-week sales numbers for his latest album, MUSIC.

According to Billboard, Carti's third studio album debuted atop the 200 chart with 298,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. However, Carti had a different number, which he tweeted in response to the report.

Carti tweeted that MUSIC actually debuted at No. 1 with 320,000 equivalent album sales and thanked the Kurrco platform on X for sharing his post. Regardless of the numbers that both parties shared, the rapper has the biggest week for a rap album in 2025 and the largest streaming week for a rap project in two years with MUSIC. It also became the most-streamed album in a single day in 2025 so far on Spotify.

This isn't the first time that Carti had an issue with sales numbers for his new album. Carti previously responded to initial chart projections of his latest album reported by HITS Daily Double. The outlet claimed Carti would move 250,000 copies in the album's first week of release, but that number didn't include physical sales, even though various CD editions and merch bundles are available on Carti's official website.

The ATL native reposted the projection after news aggregator platform Hip Hop All Day posted about the sales number missing physical sales, which they referred to as "odd." Carti himself replied, "IT IS ODD."

Carti's first Billboard No. 1 album was his 2020 effort, Whole Lotta Red, which earned 100,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. MUSIC is also Carti's third Billboard 200 top 10 album, as his debut album Die Lit landed at No. 3 in 2018.

MUSIC was released on March 14 through AWGE and Interscope Records. It has a whopping 30 tracks and guest features from Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Jhené Aiko, Skepta, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Ty Dolla Sign, and Young Thug.
