South Africa's Rising Unemployment Rate
New data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) indicates a concerning rise in unemployment, with the official rate reaching 32.9% in the first quarter of this year, an increase from 31.9% in late 2023. The expanded unemployment rate, which accounts for discouraged job seekers, has risen to 43.1%, adding 237,000 unemployed individuals, bringing the total to 8.2 million.
The most severely affected sectors include private households, trade, and mining. Zanele Sabela, a spokesperson for COSATU, voiced apprehension, emphasizing the disproportionate effect on Black women and the youth. Among individuals aged 15–34, the unemployment rate stands at 46.1% (official rate) and exceeds 72% under the expanded definition.
Sabela pointed out systemic deficiencies, such as skills mismatches and sluggish economic growth, and called for enhanced public employment programs. She described the situation as a crisis, criticizing the lack of advancement in resolving labor market disparities. With youth unemployment at alarming levels, there are increasing demands for immediate economic reforms and focused job creation efforts.
