According to recent figures, the port serves approximately annually, with volumes rising sharply during the summer months. This seasonal increase has made infrastructure and service upgrades a critical priority.
Key upgrades include:
– Renovation of buildings at passenger terminals
– Installation of shaded waiting areas with cooling systems
– Addition of new seating and landscaping
– Improved signage for passenger navigation
– Creation of designated parking zones for vehicles during boarding and disembarkation
– Enhanced safety and security protocols
– Installation of free water dispensers
– Deployment of chemical toilets
– Launch of a new waste-sorting and collection system to improve cleanliness and support recycling
– Repainting of road markings, with enhanced features for accessibility, including updated signage and color-coded ramps for wheelchair users
In an announcement, PPA highlighted that the initiative aims to modernize day-to-day operations at the central passenger port and strengthen its role as both a gateway to the Greek islands and a strategic hub for tourism.
“As we head into peak season, our priority is to serve the thousands of daily travelers with safety and efficiency—reflecting the port’s commitment to a passenger-focused experience,” the authority said.
