Pichai Responds to Nadella's 'Dance Invite'

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has addressed Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's comments regarding competition in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. Nadella had stated he wanted to make Google "dance" in the AI race, a remark Pichai responded to during an appearance on the All-In podcast. This marks the second time Pichai has addressed Nadella's statement.

During the podcast, host David Friedberg inquired about the intense competition in the AI sector, specifically asking about companies led by figures like Sam Altman (OpenAI), Elon Musk (xAI), Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), and Satya Nadella (Microsoft). Pichai acknowledged the competition, stating, "Obviously, it's a very impressive group," and described these companies as being led by some of the most driven entrepreneurs, whose involvement highlights the potential for innovation. With humor, he added, "Look, they’re all different personalities. I’m lucky to know each of them. I think only one of them has ever invited me to a dance—not the others.”

Pichai previously addressed the question of whether Google "danced" in response to Microsoft’s AI push with Bing, firmly stating that Google is focused on its own path. He emphasized the importance of not being distracted by external noise, saying, "One of the ways you can go wrong is by paying too much attention to the noise and dancing to someone else’s music." He reiterated Google's clear vision and commitment to its own strategy, stating, "I've always been clear—we know what we need to do."

Nadella had earlier commented on Google's dominance in search, but expressed that the launch of AI-powered Bing would introduce more competition. "We competed today. Today we brought more competition to search," Nadella said, acknowledging Google's leading position while expressing his hope that Google would respond innovatively. "I hope that, with our innovation, they’ll come out and show they can dance. And I want people to know—we made them dance. That would be a great day.”

Pichai acknowledged the competitive dynamics in the tech industry and emphasized the importance of relentless innovation to stay ahead. "There's always intense competition in this industry. The way to stay ahead is through relentless innovation,” he said.
