Taking to its social media platforms, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations announced it is looking for Philip Nahashon Aroko, as a person of interest in the assassination of the MP a week ago.

With his name now trending widely, Kenyans have unearthed the condolence message that Aroko made on social media after the MP was murdered.

"It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I extend my heartfelt condolences following the tragic and untimely demise of Honourable Charles Ongondo Were, our sitting Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency. The news of his passing, after being gunned down last night, has left us all shocked, pained and grieving," he wrote on Facebook on May 1, 2025.

He further urged the DCI to expedite the investigations and arrest those connected to the murder.

"As we come to terms with this great loss, I urge the relevant authorities, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to conduct thorough and swift investigations and bring those responsible for this heinous act to justice. Violence must never be allowed to silence the voice of leadership or rob communities of their chosen representatives," he said.

Aroko further sent his condolences to the bereaved family, praying for them to find strength at this tough time.

In a subsequent post, the suspect posted a photo of himself shaking hands with the slain parliamentarian, describing him as a worthy competitor.

"Hon. Charles Ong'ondo was not just a worthy competitor, he was my Member of Parliament. I hope and trust that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will pursue all avenues to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. I urge my fellow constituents to remain calm and prayerful during this difficult time as we mourn the loss of our MP."

With the Facebook post now circulating widely, Kenyans have been stunned by the irony, as Philip is now wanted for the murder of the MP.

The DCI asked the Kasipul man to surrender immediately to the nearest police station.

Kenyans have shared diverse views on this latest development. Here are some of the comments:

Obala Ongondo said:

"Human beings are just problematic and not sincere. If he had not sent his condolences to the family of the late Ongondo Were, he could have been branded with negativities. Again, he sent condolences, and still, he was being branded. Anyway, may Were rest in peace."

Babake AnnEarste said:

"You may judge or think that whatever you see happening in these investigations is real. Wait for the results, you might be shocked, whoever the suspect might be."

Rinah Efumbi Painito

"It is getting interesting. I said the first suspect was supposed to be his bodyguard and driver, because someone cannot shoot the MP five times and you fail to shoot back."

Cephas A. Ssenyonjo said:

"Your killers are not always far away from you.....the more people you bring closer, the more risks you have on your life."

As earlier reported, family and friends of the late Kasipul MP held a requiem mass at the Consolata Shrine on Wednesday, May 7.

Accompanied by close allies of the late politician, the family demonstrated great strength and showed unity as they held onto each other during the mass.

His children particularly stepped out in lovely white outfits, and despite the tough season they are in, they dazzled in honour of their father.

In a video, the family were accompanied to Lee Funeral Home to pick the body ahead of the requiem mass.

Several politicians, including Babu Owino, were spotted being emotional during the service.
