Charles Were Linked to MP's Murder, Murkomen Claims

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced on Wednesday that investigations into the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were have revealed the involvement of some of the MP's close associates. Were was fatally shot on Wednesday, April 30, in Nairobi during evening traffic by a gunman who was aided by an accomplice on a motorbike.
According to the security minister, detectives have discovered that certain allies of Were collaborated with his killers. Murkomen told journalists in Meru, "We have made very significant progress in arresting the perpetrators and their collaborators, and it will shock you to note that this was a heinous crime done in a cavalier manner, involving people who ordinarily should have taken good care of him in his interest." He added, "The suspects will be brought to book and serve as an example. Their punishment will be an example to anyone who thinks they can run away from the law."
Earlier in the day, police reported the arrest of two more suspects in connection with the murder probe. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified the suspects as Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, alias Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi. Upon their arrest, they led investigators to Odhiambo's house, where firearms were discovered. "A bag and footwear matching the description of those worn by one of the suspects at the scene of the incident were also recovered. All items have been submitted for forensic examination," the investigative agency stated.
Four suspects were arraigned on Monday in connection with the MP’s murder. The prosecution indicated that they were pursuing additional suspects, including a police officer believed to have played a key role in the killing. Investigators suspect that Were’s murder may have been orchestrated by an organized criminal network with access to considerable financial resources.
