Tapes Surface of Kanu Ordering Violence

In the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a prosecution witness has testified that Kanu admitted to making broadcasts inciting violence, including calls for the killings of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. The witness, an official of the Department of State Services (DSS), stated that Kanu also confirmed announcing a N100 million bounty on Wike’s head and urging the burning of Federal Government property in Lagos and Tinubu’s assets.
The second prosecution witness (PW2), led by lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo, testified that Kanu made these confirmations while his statement was being taken on July 17, 2021. The witness, whose identity was shielded, said that during the statement-taking, recordings of Kanu’s past broadcasts via Radio Biafra were played, revealing incitements to violence and killings. According to the witness, identified as BBB, Kanu confirmed making the broadcasts after listening to them.
Copies of Kanu’s recorded broadcasts, saved on a flash drive, were admitted into evidence after being identified by the witness and subsequently played in court. Additionally, a letter of complaint, dated June 10, 2021, from the then Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, to the Director General of the DSS, was admitted. The letter requested an investigation into Kanu and his followers' alleged terrorist activities. In the letter, Malami accused Kanu of encouraging crimes, including killings and destruction of public property, citing broadcasts where Kanu instructed IPOB members and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to attack security personnel and prominent individuals.
Malami’s letter claimed Kanu’s broadcasts incited the killing of the late PDP chieftain, Ahmed Gulak, and the burning of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma’s house. Seven recorded broadcasts were played in court. In the first broadcast, made on December 12, 2020, Kanu, dressed in a black blazer, white shirt, black tie, and red beret, announced the formation of the ESN, stating it was intended to safeguard the South-East, similar to the Amotekun Corps and Miyeti Allah.
Towards the end of the broadcast, Kanu called on his followers to go after Wike and kill him for allegedly offering a N50 million bounty for the head of a Biafran, declaring that Wike deserved to die and threatening similar treatment for any governor presiding over the killings of his people. In a second broadcast, made on October 20, 2020, during the #EndSARS protest, Kanu directed his followers to cause mayhem in Lagos and to kill Tinubu, describing him as a traitor and an evil man. He urged his supporters to burn every Federal Government property in Lagos, including the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, the NITEL House in Marina, and all police stations.
