The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the fatal shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were, in what is being treated as a targeted and premeditated attack.
In a Wednesday statement released by the Office of the Inspector General, the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.
According to eyewitness accounts, a white Toyota Crown had stopped at a traffic light when it was approached by a motorcycle carrying two individuals.
According to the police statement, the pillion passenger reportedly disembarked, walked to the vehicle’s passenger side, and opened fire before fleeing the scene with the rider.
The vehicle's driver and another passenger, who were not harmed, rushed the MP to Nairobi Hospital.
He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Hospital staff later confirmed his identity as the sitting MP for Kasipul constituency.
In its statement, the NPS condemned the killing as a "heinous and senseless crime," offering condolences to the MP’s family, fellow lawmakers, constituents, and close associates.
Senior officers and crime scene investigators have since been deployed to piece together the circumstances surrounding the brazen attack.
Authorities have urged members of the public with any information to report to the nearest police station or contact law enforcement via the toll-free lines 999, 112, or through the anonymous reporting platform #FichuakwaDCI at 0800 722 203.
