Arrests Made in Kasipul MP Charles Were's Murder Case

The murder of Kaspul Member of Parliament Charles Were on April 30, 2025, has led to significant police activity and several arrests. Authorities have apprehended four suspects in connection with the assassination, some of whom are linked to the Mjahidin gang, a criminal organization known for armed robberies in Nairobi's Eastlands area.
Police investigations have utilized CCTV footage and witness accounts to track the movements of the suspects and the victim. Detectives recovered crucial evidence, including three motorcycles and a car believed to have been used in the crime. One suspect was found hiding near the United States International University (USIU), while others were located in Dandora.
The prime suspect reportedly had a new mobile phone and sim card dedicated to the mission, which he discarded after the shooting. Police are analyzing the gadget to identify his contacts. The gunman, who wore a hood to conceal his identity, ambushed Were at a traffic jam on Valley Road, firing four shots at close range. He then escaped on a waiting motorcycle before switching to a car.
Investigators have mapped the routes Were took before the shooting, including City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, and Jakaya Kikwete Road. CCTV footage captured a man monitoring Were's car along Wabera Street. The bodyguard, who was with Were, reported that the attack caught him unawares. The MP was rushed to Nairobi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
President William Ruto has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, asserting that violence cannot be part of Kenya's culture. The National Police Service has urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation that could hinder the investigation. The police have also cautioned against making comments that might compromise the process.
Rangwe MP Lilian Gogo, Were's sister-in-law, suggested the killing was politically motivated and urged investigators to pursue individuals Were had previously mentioned in public addresses.
