According to Boston Herald insiders Doug Kyed and Andrew Callahan, the Patriots are focused on securing a game-changing wideout and would prefer to sign one outright rather than sacrifice assets in a trade. With a hefty $127 million in cap space, New England is eyeing two of the biggest names set to hit free agency: Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin. Both receivers have the playmaking ability to instantly elevate a Patriots offense that has struggled to find consistency in recent years.
But if things don’t go as planned on the free-agent market, the Patriots have a backup plan in motion.

Metcalf, a 6’4”, 230-pound athletic freak, has been a nightmare for defenses since entering the league in 2019. With three 1,000-yard seasons, 48 career touchdowns, two Pro Bowl selections, and a second-team All-Pro honor in 2020, he’s proven himself as one of the most physically dominant receivers in the game. If the Patriots were to land him, he’d immediately become rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s go-to weapon.
However, the question isn’t just whether New England wants Metcalf, it’s whether Seattle is willing to move him. The

’ star is entering the final year of his three-year, $72 million extension, and if Seattle decides to trade him, they may consider his preferences.
