Paddington In Peru CinemaScore Achieves A Rare Feat For Any Major Franchise

Published 2 months ago3 minute read

Paddington in Peru has already achieved an extremely rare feat. The third movie in the franchise sees Paddington return to Peru, alongside the Brown family, when his aunt goes missing. The movie has already received a full run in the United Kingdom, but it has finally reached other major markets this past week, including the United States. It has earned over $100 million so far against a $90 million budget. Paddington in Peru cast includes Ben Whishaw (Paddington), Hugh Bonneville (Henry), Emily Mortimer (Mary), Madeleine Harris (Judy), and Samuel Joslin (Jonathan).

Paddington in Peru managed to earn an A rating from CinemaScore, a site that measures audience responses to movies. The previous movies, Paddington (2015) and Paddington 2 (2018), also earned an A score. This means that these three movies have achieved a rare accomplishment, as few other trilogies have ever earned triple As.

The franchise has certainly proven that it is a critical darling, but the CinemaScore indicates that viewers love it just as much as the critics. No live-action Paddington movie has ever earned less than a 90% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, and none has ever earned under 80% from audiences. This has not necessarily translated into box office dominance, unfortunately. While Paddington 2 was better received than the original, it also earned $41 million less than the original. Check out the chart below, which showcases this disparity:

The threequel is in a unique position, as it was released in dozens of international locations before appearing in theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Thanks to that distribution strategy, projecting its future is considerably more simple. Unfortunately, it did not result in a positive ending for the movie ahead of the confirmed Paddington 4. It will need to excel in its new markets, or it is unlikely to ever achieve profitability. With a $90 million budget, it will likely need approximately $120 million more to achieve success, and word-of-mouth could be a significant help.

While it has not resulted in blockbuster results, this CinemaScore accomplishment is undoubtedly a massive feat. Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise managed it, but other franchises, including The Lord of the Rings, the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and the first three Hunger Games movies, failed to achieve that mark. It will likely be a massive help when Paddington in Peru comes to streaming, as viewers may be more interested without having to head to theaters. Depending on the second-week drop, it could also excel at the box office going forward.
