The Olofin of Isheri-Mole Kingdom, Oba Sulaimon Ayodele III, has explained the motive behind the maiden Awori Unity Cup being organised by the community, saying it is more than just a football competition.

He said it is a vision for cultural unity, youth empowerment, and community development.

Speaking to The Nation after the kickoff of the maiden competition, the monarch said: “This tournament is more than just football, it’s about our identity as a people.”

The tournament, bringing together 32 teams from Awori communities in Lagos and Ogun, will address political and geographical divisions that have distanced people of shared heritage.

“We have Awori in Lagos and Ogun, but many don’t know one another. This tournament is a way for our youths to meet, interact, and grow together,” he monarch said.

According to Oba Ayodele, the idea was developed in collaboration with the Awori Welfare Association of Nigeria (AWAN) to give Awori youths a platform that encourages unity and also identifies sporting talent.

“Our youths need hope, especially with how hard things are in the country. This Cup is a way to keep them engaged and inspired. Scouts and national league officials can discover new stars here,” he added.

Despite facing financial challenges in putting the tournament together, Oba Ayodele said that he personally funded most of the activities. However, a few companies and individuals also offered support.

“We got a company that gave us drinks and water. Some people helped with cash donations. It’s not easy, but God has been faithful,” he said.

The Awori Unity Cup officially kicked off on April 15 at the Lagos State University (LASU) Sports Complex, Ojo Campus, with a colourful ceremony full of music, traditional dance, and cultural pride.

The Oniba Ekun of Iba Kingdom, performed the ceremonial kickoff to the delight of guests, which included traditional rulers, dignitaries, youth teams, and community leaders from across Aworiland.

At the kick off were the Oloja Ekun of Igbesa, Olu of Oregun, Agbaosi of Aguda Ogba, Olu of Agboyi, Alakesan of Akesan, Olu of Ojodu, and Olu of Mapara, among others, signaling strong support from the Awori royal community.

The opening match between Igbesa United and Akesan FC ended in a thrilling 2–1 scoreline, setting an exciting tone for the tournament, which will run for a month and conclude with a grand finale on May 11 at the LASU Stadium.

The team that emerges first will receive a cash prize of ₦1 million, while the second-place team will take home ₦500,000. The third-place winner will be awarded ₦250,000.

Asked whether women will be involved in future activities, the monarch assured women that plans are underway to include them.

“For now, our women are the biggest cheerleaders. But we hope to organise something for them too, maybe a beauty pageant. It’s all part of our bigger plan to promote the Awori identity.”

With excitement building across Awori communities, the Unity Cup has become a symbol of a new beginning.

“This is just the start,” Oba Ayodele said. “We’re building something that will last for generations.”
