Before its current location, Novi Middle School was situated in what is now the southern portion of the current Novi Meadows School. The school was relocated to its present site in 1998 to accommodate the growing student population.
The school was established to serve the educational needs of the Troy community and has been a staple in the district for decades.
As one of the older middle schools in the district, Smith Middle School is undergoing a significant renovation, with a replacement building scheduled to open in the fall of 2026.

Named after Stuart K. Baker, the first superintendent of the Troy School District, Baker Middle School honors his contributions to education in the community. Baker played a pivotal role in consolidating several school districts into the Troy School District in 1948 and served as its first superintendent.
