A parliamentary aspirant for Mt Elgon Constituency in Bungoma County has claimed his life is at risk after an alleged assault by sitting MP Fred Chesebe Kapondi on Saturday.

Patrick Chemosit, who aims to challenge Kapondi in the 2027 elections, says he sustained serious head injuries during the attack, which he alleges was orchestrated by the MP and carried out by a group of supporters.

The incident reportedly occurred in Kapkateny village, as he was driving home after attending a burial ceremony in Sacho village. According to him, Kapondi, who was also present at the funeral, had his entourage follow and block his vehicle.

“The MP got out, pulled a pistol, and ordered about 15 armed supporters to attack me,” Chemosit told journalists.

His driver, Francis Kiboi, was also injured, sustaining wounds to his left hand, and both sought treatment at Bungoma Hospital.

Chemosit believes the attack was retaliation for remarks he made at the funeral criticising the MP’s development record, which drew strong support from the crowd. “I spoke before him, and people cheered me. That must have angered him. He turns to violence when he feels threatened,” he said.

Kopsiro Sub County Police Commander Julius Kiptoo confirmed the incident and said both Kapondi and Chemosit were summoned to provide statements on Monday. “We are investigating, and it appears linked to political differences,” Kiptoo said. No charges have been filed as the inquiry continues.

Kapondi has not yet responded to the allegations. Business Today contacted his office for comment, but received no reply by the time of publication.
