Nvidia Plans AI Supercomputer in Taiwan

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has announced plans to collaborate with Taiwanese tech giants Foxconn and TSMC, along with the Taiwanese government, to build Taiwan's first AI supercomputer. This initiative aims to bolster Taiwan's AI infrastructure and ecosystem. The announcement was made on the eve of Computex, a major tech expo held in Taipei, where global semiconductor chip companies gather to discuss industry advancements and challenges.

Huang emphasized the importance of having a world-class AI infrastructure in Taiwan, highlighting the island's central role in the artificial intelligence revolution. Taiwan is home to many critical suppliers in the tech industry and produces a significant portion of the world's most advanced chips, essential for powerful AI applications and research.

Computex draws computer and chip companies from around the world to Taiwan, showcasing advances in moving AI from data centers into various applications such as laptops, robots, and cars. This year's event focuses on the next frontier of AI, from agentic AI driving smarter devices to physical AI reshaping autonomy.

While US tariffs remain a concern for the sector, many companies at Computex are expected to avoid directly addressing them due to the uncertain situation. The US has announced a national security probe into semiconductor technology imports, potentially leading to tariffs that could impact the industry. Despite these challenges, Huang expressed optimism about Taiwan's future, asserting that the island will continue to thrive and remain at the center of the technology ecosystem.

Taiwan has pledged to increase investment in the United States to mitigate the impact of potential tariffs. TSMC plans to invest an additional $100 billion in the US, and TSMC-supplier GlobalWafers also intends to increase its US investment by $4 billion, opening a wafer facility in Texas. These investments are aimed at maintaining Taiwan's position in the global technology landscape.
