NESG CEO: Africa must harmonise interpretation of trade protocols across borders

Aduloju spoke during the West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) 2025, held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja on Friday.

According to a statement by the think tank, he highlighted the pressing infrastructure gaps across the region that continue to impede seamless intra-African trade.

“It remains easier to trade outside the continent than within it,” Aduloju said.

“We must address infrastructure inefficiencies and align the interpretation of trade protocols across borders to unlock regional commerce and competitiveness.”

He said that beyond policies, Africa needs to craft a stronger narrative around its trade and investment potential.

The CEO called for increased investments in special economic zones and the development of regional trade corridors, which he described as vital for industrial growth and export diversification.

He said human capital development is crucial, emphasizing that Nigeria’s youthful population can only serve as a competitive advantage if equipped with the right digital and technical skills.

“We must invest in the next generation of innovators, builders, and digital workers,” Aduloju said.

He added that targeted skills development is foundational for sustainable industrialisation.

Also, the CEO said public-private partnerships (PPPs) are essential for identifying and addressing sector-specific infrastructure and industrial gaps.

Aduloju encouraged the region to explore innovative financing mechanisms, including diaspora engagement, to mobilise capital for transformative growth.

He outlined a threefold strategy for regional competitiveness: closing infrastructure gaps, equipping human capital, and harmonising cross-border policies.

The CEO said the strategies must be pursued through deliberate cooperation and coordinated action at both national and regional levels.
