NDLEA, Lagos youth ministry collaborate to combat drug abuse
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development have commenced discussions on strategies to address the growing challenge of illicit drug abuse among youths in the state.
The Tincan Island Port Strategic Commander of the NDLEA, Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju, revealed this during a working visit to the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, at the ministry’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja.
The meeting sought to explore avenues for cooperation between the agency and the ministry in promoting a drug-free society, particularly among young people. Commander Ofoyeju highlighted the critical need for collaboration to curb drug abuse and trafficking, noting the youth’s role as future leaders of the nation.
He stated, “The War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign initiative of the Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa-led administration is gathering momentum across the country. We are committed to working with your ministry to educate and sensitise the youth on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking. By working together, we can make a significant impact in reducing drug abuse among young people in Lagos State.”
In response, Ogunlende commended the NDLEA for its efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking and expressed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the agency. He remarked, “We are committed to supporting the NDLEA in its efforts to prevent drug abuse and trafficking. Our mandates are interwoven, and I strongly believe that by working together, we can create a safer and healthier environment for our young people to thrive.”
The discussion also covered preparations for the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, scheduled for June 26, which will include sensitisation programmes, workshops, and seminars aimed at educating young people about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
The visit marked a significant step towards strengthening the partnership between the NDLEA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Lagos State.
