Published 1 month ago2 minute read

The newly constituted Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) Electoral Committee has reassured members of the legal profession and the public of its commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible electoral process that will usher in a democratically elected leadership for the section.

In a statement following its recent inaugural meeting, the Committee reiterated SPIDEL’s unwavering dedication to upholding the public interest by challenging government impunity and insensitivity.

It pledged to safeguard and promote the rule of law for the nation’s development.

The Committee also affirmed its resolve to work collaboratively with NBA President Afam Osigwe, the National Executive Council (NEC), and other statutory organs of the Association.

It emphasised strict adherence to the NBA Constitution and the core objectives of SPIDEL as it sets out to rejuvenate the Section.

Expressing gratitude for the confidence reposed in them by the NBA-SPIDEL, Committee Chairman, Prof. Paul Ananaba (SAN) said: “We are happy to convey our unanimous, unreserved acceptance of the assignment handed to us by the NBA leadership and hereby express our readiness to hit the ground running on the onerous task of rejuvenating SPIDEL as the operational hub and heartbeat of the Bar.”

This development followed NEC’s meeting of the NBA held in Ilorin, Kwara State, on May 15, 2025, where the Council dissolved the previous Steve Adehi (SAN) led NBA-SPIDEL Steering Committee.

In its place, the NEC appointed the current Committee, chaired by Prof. Ananaba, comprising Kunle Edun (SAN), Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, Saadatu Mohammed, Mojirayo Ogunlana, Enome Amatey and Okey Ohagba as Secretary.

The Committee lauded President Osigwe for his decisive action in reviving SPIDEL despite prevailing challenges.

“We equally convey the Committee’s profound appreciation to the President for the confidence reposed in us to execute such a critical mandate of rebirthing NBA-SPIDEL,” Ananaba added.

In furtherance of its mandate, the Committee announced plans to convene a maiden NBA-SPIDEL Stakeholders’ Engagement to gather and harmonise views from stakeholders and leaders within the Bar.

This initiative aims to chart an all-inclusive and positive course for the Section’s future.

Additionally, preparations are underway to ensure the robust participation of SPIDEL at the forthcoming NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) in Enugu.

The Committee assured that detailed information on SPIDEL’s activities and sessions at the AGC, including electoral guidelines for electing Council members, will be released in due course.

Existing members are encouraged to regularise their membership, while new members are warmly welcomed to join the fold.
