NBA Africa Expands Presence with New Basketball Court in Nairobi

NBA Africa, in partnership with Opportunity International, a global nonprofit organization focused on developing innovative programs using financial services, training, and support to combat poverty worldwide, officially unveiled a new outdoor basketball court at Loiswell Academy in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. This unveiling is a significant step in NBA Africa's broader commitment to construct 1,000 basketball courts across the African continent over the next decade, aiming to promote sports access and youth development.

The new court in Nairobi follows closely on the heels of a similar launch at Highland School in Nyamata, Rwanda, which occurred last week, demonstrating the ongoing efforts and dedication to this continent-wide initiative. The Loiswell Academy court is anticipated to become a valuable community asset, providing local youth with a dedicated space for sports and recreation.

The inauguration was marked by a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony. Key figures in attendance included Michael Finley, NBA Kenya Country Operations Lead; Ken Wathome, a Board of Directors Member for Opportunity International; Randy Kurtz, Executive Vice President of International Programs and Capital Solutions at Opportunity International; Lois Mbugua, the Founder and Director of Loiswell Academy; and former NBA player Hasheem Thabeet. Their participation underscored the collaborative spirit and importance of the project.

Immediately following the ceremony, the newly unveiled court hosted a Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA clinic. This event catered to 100 boys and girls aged 16 and under, offering them an engaging basketball experience and the first opportunity to play on the new facility. Such clinics are integral to NBA Africa's mission of fostering basketball talent and promoting healthy lifestyles among young people.

Opportunity International's involvement highlights its dedication to creating pathways out of poverty by supporting initiatives that empower communities and provide resources for growth. The information about this event was disseminated by APO Group on behalf of the National Basketball Association (NBA), further emphasizing the official nature and backing of the project.
