The Samoei Boys Secondary School community is in mourning following the death of a learner Saturday evening, May 24.

The deceased, a Form 4 student, was in the field with his teammates training for an oncoming rugby match on Sunday, May 25, when lightning struck.

Reports indicate the 17-year-old died on the spot.

Nandi East OCPD Leariwallah Jeremiah confirmed the tragedy.

Police showed up at the scene and left with the body, which they ferried to the morgue.

Incidents of learners dying in school in various circumstances have constantly been reported in the recent days.

In March this year, reported a tragedy that claimed lives at Ramba Boys High School.

Two students lost their lives at the institution when the septic tank they were standing on collapsed on the evening of Saturday, March 22.

The victims were final-year learners at the extra-county school located in Rarieda Constituency, Siaya County.

Area Member of Parliament, Otiende Amollo, confirmed the heartbreaking incident, asking the investigators to expedite their probe into the tragedy.

Two other students survived the incident and were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Emergency responders from the Kenya Red Cross and the National Police Service arrived at the scene to retrieve the bodies and prevent further risks.

Meanwhile, parents laid the blame on the school administration, citing negligence for the tragedy and expressing concerns over the lack of communication following the incident.

In another tragic incident, a 10-year-old pupil at Red Hill Baraka School in Gachie died.

Shawn Victor Were breathed his last on February 21 this year.

On that fateful day, Shawn's mother received an urgent call from the school, informing her that her son had fallen ill and lost consciousness.

She and her husband quickly made their way to the institution, only to find Shawn lying on a mattress with teachers gathered around him.

Acting swiftly, they transported him to a hospital in Kikuyu, but despite the medical team's best efforts, he was pronounced dead soon after.

Initial assessments suggested he had suffered a seizure.

It was further discovered that during the emergency, he had been given rice and watermelon, which led to choking and obstructed his airway.

As details of the incident surfaced, concerns grew about whether the teachers had been fully transparent with the parents.

According to reports, Shawn had been assigned to manage his class, but later faced disciplinary action alongside other students due to noisemaking.

Sources revealed that the punishment involved completing laps around the school field.

While running, he reportedly collapsed and began convulsing.

Accusations were levelled against the school’s administration for failing to act swiftly in getting him medical help, with claims that parents were informed no transport was available.
