A wave of shock and frustration swept through Kapkilel Centre on Saturday morning after boda boda riders discovered that their newly built shed had been flattened under mysterious circumstances overnight.

The grass-thatched structure, constructed just five days earlier, was a symbol of community resilience.

Daktari Kelvin Kipchirchir Ufa told that each rider had contributed KSh 30 towards buying grass and tree poles to create the shelter.

The idea was to shield them from the scorching sun and unpredictable rains, conditions they endure daily while waiting for passengers.

But the joy was short-lived.

“This now is pure sabotage. Hii sasa ni destroyers of economy,” said one devastated rider, struggling to comprehend who would destroy such a modest community effort.
“Sasa ikinyesha, tutakuja kazi kweli?” another asked, referring to the looming rains that make their work difficult without proper shelter.

While the perpetrator remains unknown, suspicion is mounting among locals, with many pointing fingers at the county leadership.

Some believe the destruction was politically motivated, as the riders have recently been vocal about being neglected by their elected leaders.

Ezekiel, one of the boda boda operators, was visibly angry.

“Hii kesi nitaenda DCI lazima iwe investigated. We can't build alafu mtu aje kubomoa,” he declared.

He added that the group will not be silenced or intimidated, and that the destruction has only made them more determined to fight for their rights.

The incident has stirred a deep sense of betrayal, but it has also fueled a renewed spirit of unity. Riders are already mobilising to rebuild the shed—this time stronger and more durable.

“I’m ready to buy four second-hand iron sheets. Let’s contribute again,” said Doreen, one of the few women in the male-dominated trade. “They may bring down the shelter, but not our determination.”

The destroyed shelter may now be just a pile of broken poles and scattered grass, but for Kapkilel’s boda boda riders, it represents something far greater—a test of unity, resilience, and the power of grassroots voices.
