Njeri is struggling to support her three school-going children due to a lack of employment and ongoing financial hardship.
She disclosed that since separating from her partner—the love of her life—life has been increasingly difficult.
The mother of three shared that her challenges began early in life.
“When I was in Grade 6, my aunt took me to live with her friend. I don't know why she took me from our home in Murang’a county to live with that woman. I had a rough time there. The woman mistreated me. Sometimes, she denied me food, and I would go to school hungry. My stay with her was horrible, and I only returned home after completing Grade 8.
However, I never continued with my education because there was no money for school fees. I was forced to repeat Grade 8, hoping to get a scholarship or that money would become available to take me to high school. But that never happened,” she recounted.
With her educational dreams shattered, Njeri resorted to doing menial jobs at a young age.
She later secured a job in Nairobi as a house help before meeting the man she believed would change her life.
“The man said he wanted to marry me. I saw it as my way out of hardship and agreed. We were 'married' a few months after meeting. But the relationship wasn’t what I expected. He became violent. I remember one time he chased me with a machete,” she said.
They separated in 2019 after being together for 12 years. Life became even more challenging as she was left with three children to care for, without a job or support.
Two of her children are in high school—one in Form Three and another in Form Two—while the youngest is in Grade Six. They all require school fees and other necessities, which Njeri struggles to provide.
She has been singlehandedly raising the children but is now overwhelmed by the burden.
To keep her family afloat, she takes on various menial jobs, including working at construction sites and washing clothes.
“I need help to educate my children. If someone could also be kind enough to offer me a job or help me start a small business, I would be so grateful,” she pleaded.
