Nairobi: Police Officer Interdicted for Assaulting Colleague Over Affair

Recent incidents involving police officers have highlighted concerns about conduct and conflict within the force. These events range from altercations between colleagues to allegations of abuse of power, raising questions about accountability and internal discipline.

One incident involves Police Constable Elizabeth Alonsi, who has been interdicted and taken into custody following allegations of pouring hot water on a female colleague during an argument. According to a police news brief, Alonsi is currently in detention and will face both internal disciplinary proceedings and legal action. The victim reportedly sustained injuries to her face and back and is receiving medical care. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure justice is served. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for a thorough review of police conduct.

In a separate incident in Nairobi, tensions escalated between two police officers at a local bar. According to a police report, Police Constable Piro Mwarsho of Kamukunji Police Station went to Joiners Grill and Lodge bar to retrieve his mobile phone. Inside, he encountered his colleague, PC Emmanuel Juma, who confronted him, accusing him of having an affair with his girlfriend. The situation quickly turned violent, with Juma allegedly slapping Mwarsho multiple times before drawing his AK-47 rifle and firing a shot. The bullet narrowly missed Mwarsho, piercing through a metallic wall and a tube grill.

Mwarsho managed to escape and reported the incident at Kamukunji Police Station. Responding officers visited the scene and conducted an initial investigation. Although the spent cartridge was not recovered initially, Juma later surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody, with his firearm confiscated as evidence. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

In another tragic event, a police officer fatally shot his colleague during a heated argument at a nightclub. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a personal dispute between the two officers, who were off-duty at the time. Witnesses described a violent escalation that culminated in the fatal shooting, causing panic among club patrons. The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities following a manhunt. Police confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting was service-issued, raising concerns about weapon management within the police force. Colleagues described the deceased as a dedicated officer, adding to the shock and grief within their unit.

These incidents underscore the need for enhanced oversight, conflict resolution mechanisms, and psychological support within the police force to prevent such occurrences in the future. Stricter protocols for handling firearms and addressing personal disputes among officers are also essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring the safety of both officers and civilians.
