My life in danger, pensioner laments in Abia
Former education secretary in Abia State, Onukwuo Onuegbu has raised the alarm over persistent harassment, intimidation and threats to his life by his opponents over land matters, declaring that his life is in danger.
He appealed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police and the Abia State government to intervene and save his life.
The octogenarian who raised the concern at a news conference in Umuahia, on Monday, alleged that some members of Ogbuti family in Bende town of Bende LGA had, in an attempt to acquire his land, inflicted injuries on him with a threat to kill him should he did not relinquish possession of the land
He claimed that some members of the family had, in March, 2025, violently chased him and his daughter, Christiana away from a parcel of land called Ebeh, which he inherited from his late father in 1957 with all documents intact, stating that he has been farming there, as well as leasing it out to other farmers.
He disclosed that the report he made at Bende Division of Nigerian Police Force was not handled well, prompting him to report the matter to the Amaogwu village Arbitration Panel for amicable resolution of the matter.
Onuegbu said “But during the second day of the arbitration Panel, they (his opponents) pounced on me, beating me with sticks, dislocating my left shoulder and inflicting a big injury on my head. They had earlier beaten an 80-year-old man, IroanyaOnukwuo to stupor over the matter,” he alleged.
Onukwue, who said he was still struggling to recover from the injuries he suffered, expressed the fear that his life is endangered by the threat.
Reacting, a member of the Ogbuti family, Chukwuemeka Ogbuti, faulted the claim by Onuegbu, explaining that nobody beat or harassed him or threatened his life
He said, “I am telling you that nobody beat him, nobody chased him or is threatening his life.
“I don’t have boundaries with him, he is the one dragging my own land which I have been operating for over 40 years.”
