The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has reiterated the importance of mutual respect and sensitivity in diplomatic relations, following a joint statement by 12 Western diplomatic missions in Nairobi regarding planned demonstrations in Kenya on June 25.

The Ministry affirmed that “the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression remain protected pillars of Kenya’s constitutional democracy,” but stressed that “Kenya’s democracy does not operate in a vacuum.”

While acknowledging concerns about certain policing methods during protests, the Ministry, led by Musalia Mudavadi, assured the international community that “any violations—once established—will be addressed through independent institutions, including the Judiciary and Parliament.”

However, it cautioned that international commentary on domestic affairs should refrain from promoting narratives that risk escalating tensions or undermining institutions.

“Kenya remains a willing partner in the global democratic project but cautions against expressions that are overly prescriptive and insensitive to the complex national and global environment in which all our states operate, particularly the perilous challenges that democracies face,” the statement read.

The Ministry underscored that diplomatic partnerships flourish best under “mutual respect,” open communication, and a “recognition of each country’s unique governance contexts and challenges,” in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The Ministry noted that the responsibility to maintain public order and protect all citizens lies squarely with the State and must be exercised within the bounds of restraint, legality, and care.

Adding to the Ministry’s position, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Korir Sing’oei, stated:

“Democratic protest must be protected but any weaponization of protests to achieve extra-constitutional objectives must be met with strong condemnation. Kenya’s stability is paramount.”

The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs expressed its commitment to continued collaboration with diplomatic missions accredited to Kenya, built on respect, objectivity, and shared values.
