Mutfwang condemns killing of 8 travellers in Plateau, vows justice
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State has condemned the killing of eight travelers in Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, June 20, 2025, after a group traveling from Zaria in Kaduna State to Quan’pan Local Government Area reportedly lost their way and encountered unrest in the area.
This was revealed in a statement by Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Executive Governor of Plateau State
According to initial reports, the group ran into a volatile atmosphere in Mangun, a community dealing with recent waves of violence. Eight individuals were killed in what the government has described as a mob action, and several others were injured and are currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital in Mangu.
During a visit to the hospital and the site of the attack, Governor Mutfwang described the incident as a painful development that undermines ongoing efforts to restore peace in Plateau.
“Today is a tragic day for us in Plateau State. I never imagined such a senseless act of violence could occur within our borders,” he said. The governor noted that youths in the area had previously worked with security forces to repel attacks and expressed dismay that they could be involved in such violence.
“It is deeply disheartening that the same youths who have shown courage and patriotism would turn around and take the law into their own hands.”.
Mutfwang stated that he had contacted Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, to express his condolences. He also announced that a delegation would be sent to Kaduna to extend Plateau State’s sympathies in person.
“I want to reassure Nigerians that Plateau remains a safe place for all travelers,” Mutfwang said. “We have been educating our young people about the importance of allowing free passage on all roads across the state, and this incident has come to us as a rude shock.”
The governor instructed all medical facilities handling the injured to provide full care at government expense. He further directed security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible face justice.
Mutfwang also condemned the broader pattern of violence across rural parts of Plateau, including Bokkos, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Bassa. He acknowledged the impact of these attacks on communities and called for an end to the killings and displacement.
The Plateau State Government reiterated its commitment to peace and accountability. Governor Mutfwang emphasized that violence and jungle justice would not be tolerated under his administration.Mutfwang condemns killing of 8 travellers in Plateau, vows justice
