Motorists Feared Dead In Major Accident On Nyanya-Mararaba Road In Abuja | Sahara Reporters

The fatal event came barely 24 hours after another accident occurred in the same vicinity on Sunday evening.

Motorists were feared dead on Monday evening when a trailer and a vehicle transporting sachet water crashed into each other on the Nyanya-Mararaba Road near Karu Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This is not the first accident as a series of devastating accidents on the same portion of the road had left many injured or dead in the same month, with residents and commuters calling for urgent intervention to address the recurring tragedies on the busy corridor.

The impact of the Monday collision was reportedly severe, with eyewitnesses reporting that many were feared dead at the scene.

The incident caused a significant traffic gridlock, as emergency services scrambled to rescue survivors and remove the wreckage.

The fatal event came barely 24 hours after another accident occurred in the same vicinity on Sunday evening.

The earlier crash involved at least seven vehicles and resulted in multiple casualties with several of the vehicles mangled beyond repair.

While the exact number of casualties from both incidents are yet to be officially confirmed, local residents have expressed concern over the frequency of accidents on the stretch of road.

According to reports, at least two fatal crashes occurred near the Karu Bridge last month alone.

Former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Emmanuel Ogbeche, who witnessed the Sunday crash, recounted the horrific scene in a Facebook post:

“Often than not, we underestimate our going out and coming in. Just about an hour ago, some people met their end in-bound Karu Site.

“A terrible accident involving about seven cars, some beyond repairs, in a crash with a low-bed or caterpillar.”

The Nyanya-Mararaba Road is one of Abuja’s busiest routes, connecting the city centre with the populous suburbs in Nasarawa State.

Due to heavy daily traffic and poor enforcement of traffic regulations, the area has become a notorious black spot for vehicular accidents.

Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement on the latest incidents, but calls are mounting for improved road safety measures, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and better maintenance of commercial vehicles.

As emergency responders continue their efforts, commuters are advised to seek alternative routes and exercise extreme caution while travelling along the Nyanya-Mararaba corridor.
