Eight days after the devastating flood that swept through Mokwa town, headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, a mutilated body of one of the victims has been recovered.
Residents told Daily Trust that the body was found on Thursday in a farm along the bypass near a location popularly known as ‘dam’.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim could not be identified as the body was already badly decomposed. He was buried on the spot where his remains were discovered.
A resident, Tswata Mai Rubutu, who spoke to Daily Trust on telephone, said the corpse was found along the path where the floodwaters passed.
“It was the body of an adult, but we couldn’t recognize him because decomposition had already set in. He was buried at the site since the body couldn’t be moved,” he said.
Efforts to reach the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, for official confirmation were unsuccessful.
The agency had earlier confirmed 161 people dead, with several others still missing following the flood disaster.
