The National Association of Registered Midwives has distanced itself from the industrial action currently being undertaken by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

According to the executives and members of the association, they cannot support what they described as the “arrogance” of GRNMA in its handling of the issue.

The National Vice President of the association, Mr. Jonathan Yelfari, clarified their decision not to join the ongoing strike by some nursing and midwifery unions over the government’s delayed implementation of the 2024 Conditions of Service (CoS) agreement. He explained that their position is not due to disagreement over the need for better working conditions, but rather stems from dissatisfaction with how the matter has been approached.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on June 8, 2025, Mr. Yelfari emphasised that while the association supports calls for improved conditions, it disagrees with GRNMA’s confrontational approach to resolving the issue. He stressed that the association remains committed to championing the welfare of its members.

“Our refusal not to join the strike should not be mistaken for we do not support better conditions for nurses. Let me state categorically that at this material moment, it is the National Association of Registered Midwives that is doing much better and that is striving so hard to ensure that, against all odds, the conditions of nurses and midwives in this country are improved.

The data is there for everybody to see. Our decision to opt out is not because we do not support the conditions of service or that we do not want the government to implement the conditions of service, no, but the arrogance in the way the other associations handle things and their lack of professionalism in the dealings with the matter.

Their national level has not shown that they are committed to ensuring that this condition of service is implemented,” Mr. Yelfari argued forcefully during his interview.
