Mercury in normal range, but humidity high in Mumbai

Mumbai: Even as Mumbai continues to grapple with high humidity levels, day temperatures across the city remained largely within the normal range on Wednesday, offering slight relief amid the ongoing sultry spell.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature recorded at the Colaba observatory was 33.6 °C — 0.4 degrees above normal — while Santacruz logged 33.7 °C, just 0.1 degrees above normal. Though the mercury did not spike significantly, the discomfort index remains high due to elevated humidity.
Relative humidity levels remained high throughout the day, with Colaba recording a peak of 90% and Santacruz 85%. The combination of moderately high temperatures and intense humidity has left residents feeling fatigued, especially during the afternoon hours. "It is not the heat as much as the stickiness. Even five minutes outside makes you want to rush back into an air-conditioned room," said Ghatkopar resident Shruti Shah, who works from home.
The weather bureau has forecast clear skies for the city and its suburbs over the next 24 hours. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 34 °C, while minimums could drop slightly to around 25 °C.

"We've stopped our evening walks for now. It's just too uncomfortable to be outdoors," said 67-year-old Nerul resident Meenal Joshi.
Historic records show that the highest day temperature recorded for the month of April has been 42.2 degrees on April 14,1952.
Last year the highest day temperature recorded was off 39.7 degrees on April 17.
