IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai with thunderstorms and rain warning

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on May 13, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds at isolated locations.Light showers may continue into May 14, but conditions are expected to dry up thereafter, with clear skies likely to return by mid-week.Just last week, Mumbai was under a yellow alert for four straight days as intermittent heavy showers and squally winds swept across the city.

The unseasonal downpour made it the second wettest May in a decade, with IMD's Colaba station recording 48.7 mm of rainfall and Santacruz logging 38.4 mm by Friday. The rains brought a welcome relief from the heat, with minimum temperatures dipping sharply. Colaba recorded 22.2°C, its coldest May day since 1951, while Santacruz registered 20.6°C on Thursday morning.Experts say the onset of the pre-monsoon phase led to increased moisture across Maharashtra's western belt. Combined with daytime heating, this is triggering scattered evening thunderstorms across the region.Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on May 13, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds at isolated locations.Light showers may continue into May 14, but conditions are expected to dry up thereafter, with clear skies likely to return by mid-week.Just last week, Mumbai was under a yellow alert for four straight days as intermittent heavy showers and squally winds swept across the city.
