'Materialists' Debuts With A24's 3rd Best Box Office Opening - mxdwn Movies
This would be A24’s 3rd best domestic opening, behind Ari Aster’s breakout feature Hereditary, which opened at $13.5 million, and Alex Garland’s Civil War, which opened at $25.5 million. This domestic opening is also impressive, given the film’s tough weekend competition, which includes the live-action remake of DreamWorks’s How to Train Your Dragon.
With this projected opening, Materialists is well on its way to being in A24’s top 10 highest-grossing films domestically, as its projected opening is nearly halfway to Moonlight, Heretic, and Babygirl’s domestic grosses of $28 million, and it’s 1/3rd of the way to The Iron Claw’s domestic gross of $35 million.
At its current rate, it could be on its way to being in A24’s highest-grossing films worldwide, given that its projected opening is already nearly 1/4th of the total gross of A24’s 10th highest-grossing film worldwide, We Live in Time. However, it would need a ways to go to reach A24’s top 5 worldwide, which includes Everything Everywhere All at Once ($145 million), Civil War ($127 million), Talk to Me ($92 million), Hereditary ($88 million), and Lady Bird ($79 million). Given that two of those films had A24’s best domestic openings, it’s entirely possible that Materialists could end up in the top 5.
Materialists is a romantic drama/comedy that follows a matchmaker, played by Johnson, caught choosing between a wealthy suitor and pursuing a relationship with her ex-boyfriend, played by Evans, while struggling in her career. It is currently playing in theaters in North America.
