Maryland's Derik Queen Makes Career Move After Coaching Departure

The Maryland Terrapins made some noise in the NCAA Tournament, concluding a successful season led by freshman Derik Queen in the Sweet 16. 

Queen led the Terrapins to wins over Grand Canyon and Colorado State in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. 

After an incredible season at Maryland, Queen has officially announced he will be declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft, leaving college basketball after one year. 

Maryland's official social media account announced the news, sending a message to the freshman. 

"Proud of everything he accomplished this year and can't wait to see him in the league," Queen said.

During his lone season with the Maryland Terrapins, Queen was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The Maryland star averaged 16.5 points,  9.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. 

He originally committed to Maryland as one of the highest-rated recruits in program history, ranked as the No. 3 center and No. 12 overall player in the class of 2024 247Sports composite rankings

Queen announced his decision on SportsCenter, sharing the news with late night host Scott Van Pelt

"I have made a decision," Queen said. "First, I would like to give glory to God for guiding me and blessing me for the opportunity to pursue my dreams... I'm proud to say that I will be entering the 2025 NBA Draft." 

Queen announced his declaration for the draft soon after Maryland head coach Kevin Willard left the program to accept the head coaching role at Villanova.
