Maryland made a big splash for its men's basketball program after Kevin Willard left to be the head coach at Villanova.

Maryland hired Buzz Williams away from Texas A&M on Tuesday, a move that should keep Maryland in the hunt to go deep in future NCAA Tournaments. Willard guided Maryland to the Sweet 16 this season before losing to Florida.

Williams had been the head coach at Texas A&M for the last six seasons, taking the program to the NCAA Tournament three times, one of which was this season.

After accepting the six-year offer from Maryland, Williams released a statement, promising to make Terp Nation proud.

"I promise to uphold the history of Maryland basketball and make Terp Nation proud with the men who represent this institution," Williams said

Terps star center Derik Queen saw the statement and loved it.

"Starting to like him already," Queen tweeted.

Queen was one of the top freshmen in the country during the 2024-25 college basketball season, averaging 16.5 points and nine rebounds per game. He scored the buzzer-beater against Colorado State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, sending Maryland to the Sweet 16.

Williams will help Queen grow as a player since he has worked with a lot of great players throughout his coaching career. He also reached 11 NCAA Tournaments in 18 seasons as a head coach.

He has taken the Marquette Golden Eagles to the dance five times, the Virginia Tech Hokies three times, and the Aggies three times. He has also compiled a 373-228 record since becoming a head coach.

This season was the Terps' first trip to the Sweet 16 since the 2015-16 season. Williams is hoping to take them deeper into future NCAA Tournaments.
