APC Governors Visit Buhari

Recent political maneuvers in Nigeria have drawn significant attention, particularly concerning the interactions between former President Muhammadu Buhari and key political figures. Initially, governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Chairman Hope Uzodimma, visited Buhari in Kaduna amidst growing concerns over defections to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). This visit followed notable figures like former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai signaling their exit from the APC, reportedly with Buhari’s blessing. The exodus extended to former ministers and APC members in Buhari’s home state of Katsina, fueling speculation that Buhari’s loyalists were unhappy with the current APC administration.

Critics within the ruling party have openly blamed Buhari’s administration for economic woes and nationwide insecurity, creating friction and prompting allies of the former president to defend his legacy. Political analysts interpreted the APC governors' visit as an attempt to mend fences and prevent further defections, especially given Buhari's considerable influence in the North. However, the success of this intervention remains uncertain.

Adding complexity to the political landscape, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with other opposition leaders including Nasir El-Rufai and former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, also visited Buhari. This was closely followed by a visit from APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who dismissed the opposition's coalition talks as a "futile alliance by strange bedfellows." Ganduje asserted the APC's strength and confidence in the upcoming 2027 elections, projecting gains in both presidential and governorship seats.

Ganduje briefed Buhari on the APC's achievements since he left office and defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against accusations of skewed appointments, promising to release comprehensive data to counter these claims. He also highlighted a new decentralized approach to campaign administration, empowering local party members in their respective states.

Furthermore, Ganduje provided updates on recent election outcomes, including governorship wins in Imo, Kogi, Edo, and Ondo, while acknowledging a loss in Bayelsa State. He outlined the party's focus on upcoming elections in Anambra and Osun states and celebrated the addition of prominent figures from other parties to the APC ranks. These include former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former Labour Party governorship candidate Edwin Nkwegu, and various senators and former governors from different states. Defectors from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were also welcomed, signaling a realignment of political forces ahead of future elections.
