actress is preparing to sink her teeth into a creature feature that will see her swap ground insects for underwater predators. The Marvel star has secured a major role in a shark survival thriller helmed by , the director of Kick-Ass 2, Fantasy Island, and Imaginary. Newton will headline the upcoming film, titled Devil's Mouth, alongside Lana Condor, who is best known for her role in To All the Boys I've Loved Before, but also starred in the recently unshelved Coyote Vs. Acme.

Newton is no stranger to scares, having starred in two acclaimed horror movies (among other titles) just last year, hot on the heels of her heroic turn in the MCU's third Ant-Man film. The first was the "coming of rage love story" Lisa Frankenstein, which saw her in the titular role opposite Cole Sprouse, and the second was the hit vampire flick Abigail, the latest movie to reinvent Universal's classic monsters, putting a modern spin on Dracula's Daughter. Newton is also set to lead Ready or Not 2 alongside fellow scream queen Samara Weaving.

Devil's Mouth is a collaboration between Amazon MGM and Lionsgate, with Chelsea Kujawa overseeing the project on behalf of the latter of those two studios. Carsten Lorenz is serving as an executive producer, while Wadlow produces the film alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road Films, the production company behind the John Wick movies and its spin-offs, including the prequel miniseries The Continental, which lasted for a single season.

Wadlow is directing Devil's Mouth from a script he revised, originally written by Aja Gabel (The Staircase) and Myung Joh Wesner (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew). The story, which was featured in the 2019 Black List, follows some college friends on a trip to Thailand, where they quickly find themselves submerged in choppy waters as they get trapped in an underwater cave system. What starts as an attempt to escape their suffocating surroundings turns into a fight for survival when they realize they're sharing space with a barbaric bull shark.

Newton will not be the only one facing the toothy terrors in Devil's Mouth, as she will have Condor by her side, coming off the back of her stint as Selby in the action-thriller Valiant One opposite Outer Banks breakout star Chase Stokes. She will next be seen on screens in Tubi's Worth the Wait, David Leitch's Ballerina Overdrive, as well as Coyote vs. Acme, which is expected to release worldwide in theaters sometime next year. Her additional credits include Moonshot, Alita: Battle Angel, Deadly Class, and playing Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse.

According to reports, "old tensions and power struggles" will resurface between Newton and Condor as they attempt to navigate their way out of the cave and to the safety of the shore. They will presumably need to set their differences aside and team-up to avoid the jaws of the shark, aka the Devil's Mouth, but it remains to be seen whether their friendship will sink or swim in the face of adversity — in this scenario, a relentless predator looking for its next meal.
