Market Fire in Jos and Phone Village Fire in Kwara

A devastating fire at the Temporary Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, has destroyed over 500 shops and goods estimated at N1 billion. The incident occurred around 11 pm on Tuesday, prompting Chairman Mustapha Ibrahim to appeal to authorities for assistance and initiate investigations into the cause. Ibrahim clarified that the fire was unlikely due to electrical faults, as the main fuse is always removed before closing the market. He also criticized the fire service's slow response, claiming their vehicles were grounded despite his personal visit to their office.

In a separate incident, a fire broke out at Ilorin’s Phone Village in Challenge Market, damaging 10 kiosks, mostly phone shops and repair centers. The Kwara State Fire Service's prompt action prevented the fire from spreading, saving over 120 shops and 80 kiosks. According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, investigations indicated that a power surge caused the blaze. Director of Fire Service Falade Olumuyiwa praised the team’s efforts and sympathized with affected traders. Market traders commended the Fire Service for their rapid response, highlighting the importance of fire safety measures and electricity management in public markets.

Additionally, the Ogoja local government central market Ishibori, in Cross River, was also destroyed by fire. This incident occurred shortly after a fire at the state's high court, highlighting a concerning trend of market fires.
