Mark, Amaechi lead APC, PDP members to form new party, ADA

Published 5 hours ago3 minute read

In what is shaping up to be one of the most consequential political realignments since 2015, several senior figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have taken bold steps toward forming a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The move is led by prominent PDP stalwarts, including former Senate President, Senator David Mark, who chairs the National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), a gathering of disenchanted political heavyweights from the PDP and other opposition blocs.

Their decision signals mounting dissatisfaction within the PDP and a search for a fresh political vehicle to challenge the ruling party in 2027.

Following a series of high-level consultations, the NOCG constituted a 15-member New Platform Committee, which met on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in Abuja and formally approved the establishment of ADA.

The committee’s resolutions included the approval of the party’s name, constitution, manifesto, logo, and the appointment of an interim leadership team to guide the party through its formative phase.

Chief Akin A. Ricketts has been named Protem Chairman of ADA, while Abdullahi Musa Elayo will serve as Protem National Secretary. The committee, chaired by former Transport Minister and key PDP figure, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, also tasked the interim leadership with securing office space, pursuing registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and preparing the party for full political operations under the Electoral Act of 2022.

Sources close to the initiative suggest that internal disillusionment with the PDP’s direction, leadership tussles, and perceived inability to present a credible national alternative prompted the decision to chart a new course. According to insiders, ADA aims to reposition the opposition with a focus on inclusive governance, national unity, and democratic accountability.

Observers believe that the involvement of respected figures like Mark and Amaechi, along with others, adds significant weight to the new movement, potentially attracting further defections from the PDP and smaller opposition parties in the coming months.

As preparations for 2027 begin in earnest, the emergence of ADA could dramatically reshape Nigeria’s political equation, offering voters a new platform amid growing calls for credible alternatives to the status quo.

Political observers see the formation of ADA as a strategic move by the opposition to consolidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid growing public discontent with the current administration.

With the groundwork now laid, all eyes turn to INEC for the official registration process and to the new movement’s leadership for what could become a significant realignment in the nation’s political dynamics.
