Maple Leafs force Game 7

On May 16, 2025, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Florida Panthers 2-0 in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series, keeping their season alive. Auston Matthews scored the first goal of the series to break a scoreless tie in the third period, and Joseph Woll stopped 21 shots. Max Pacioretty added an insurance goal for the Maple Leafs.
Game 7 is scheduled for Sunday night in Toronto, with the winner advancing to face Carolina in the East final. The Maple Leafs improved to 4-2 when facing elimination since the start of the 2023 playoffs. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 15 shots for the Panthers, the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Florida coach Paul Maurice holds a 5-0 record in Game 7s, including the final game of last season's Stanley Cup Final. The Panthers are 3-1 in the ultimate game of a series, with a 2-0 record on the road. The Maple Leafs have lost their last six Game 7s, four of which were against Boston and Brad Marchand, who is now with the Panthers.
The game was only the second of this season's 68 playoff games to be 0-0 after 40 minutes. Previously, Edmonton eliminated Vegas with a 1-0 overtime victory in Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal series.
Toronto had scored 12 goals in the first seven periods of the series but struggled to score afterward until Matthews' goal. Matthews had been 0 for 31 on shots against Florida this season, including the regular season. Bobrovsky had stopped 85 of the last 86 shot attempts he faced in the series. The Maple Leafs hadn't held a lead for 216 minutes and 30 seconds.
Matthews scored the go-ahead goal with 13:40 left after a pass got away from Florida's Aaron Ekblad. His low shot beat Bobrovsky, giving the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead.
