James Howells told the BBC that he plans to purchase the dumpsite, which contains 1.4 million tonnes of waste, as he believes his girlfriend dumped the Bitcoin fortune in an area of 100,000 tonnes.

“I would potentially be interested in purchasing the landfill site. I have discussed this option recently with investment partners, and it is very much on the table,” he said.

Howells tried to sue Newport City Council to gain access to Newport's Docks Way in the hope of recovering his fortune, but the case was dismissed in January 2025.

According to the BBC, Judge Keyser KC dismissed the case, arguing that there were no reasonable grounds for bringing it to a full trial.

In response, the determined man noted that his case was dismissed too early, denying him the chance to explain himself and seek justice.

“There was so much more that could have been explained in a full trial, and that's what I was expecting,” he said.
“It's not about greed. I'm happy to share the proceeds, but nobody in a position of power will have a decent conversation with me,” he added.

While in court in December 2024, Howells explained how he forgot about his Bitcoin fortune after successfully mining it in 2009.

However, the judge ruled that the hard drive now legally belongs to the landfill site.

The Guardian reported that plans are underway to close the dumpsite in the 2025-26 financial year and replace it with a solar farm.

Howells described the council’s decision to close the dumpsite after his case was dismissed as surprising.

“The council claimed at the High Court that closing the landfill to allow me to search would have a huge detrimental impact on the people of Newport, while at the same time, they were planning to close the landfill anyway,” he told the BBC.

In other news, reported that a Bitcoin owner shared the pain of returning home to find his broken laptop, which he had used to store Bitcoin bought ten years ago, had been thrown away by his mum.

He revealed that he was one of the early Bitcoin investors and had completely forgotten about his investment.

It wasn’t until he saw his friend, who had also invested with him ten years ago, on social media claiming to have made it thanks to Bitcoin.
