Mahama visits Volta Region tidal wave victims after Independence Day celebrations

In the wake of Ghana's Independence Day celebrations on March 6, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama has promptly journeyed to the Volta Region to evaluate the extensive damage caused by recent tidal waves. The severe natural event has resulted in the displacement of numerous residents and widespread destruction of property across several coastal communities.
President Mahama's visit, which commenced immediately after the Independence Day event, underscores his administration's unwavering commitment to both national development and building resilience against escalating environmental challenges. He is scheduled to engage directly with affected residents, conduct thorough inspections of the devastated areas, and coordinate the provision of immediate relief to those in need.
The tidal waves have inflicted substantial damage, leaving hundreds of individuals homeless and causing significant destruction to homes, fishing vessels, and vital farmlands. The hardest-hit communities include Keta, Anloga, and Dzita, where residents are urgently appealing for government intervention to address their dire circumstances.
Minister for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, communicated the President's visit via a Facebook post, emphasizing President Mahama's intent to gain firsthand insight into the extent of the devastation and to ensure that appropriate support measures are swiftly implemented for those affected by the disaster.
During his Independence Day address, President Mahama highlighted the growing threat posed by climate-related disasters, such as coastal erosion and flooding, to livelihoods across the nation. He reaffirmed his government's dedication to implementing long-term solutions, including the construction of sea defence projects and the enhancement of disaster response systems, to protect vulnerable communities from future calamities. The President's swift response and commitment to long-term solutions demonstrate the government's resolve to stand with the affected communities and build a more resilient Ghana.
