As part of his commitment to fulfill a campaign promise made to Ghanaians, President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the No-Fees-Stress academic policy, aimed at ensuring that no student is denied access to tertiary education due to the inability to pay fees.

The President expressed optimism that the policy will help build a more educated and skilled population, propelling Ghana’s development agenda and creating a conducive environment for inclusive growth.

Although the No-Fees-Stress initiative had already begun before today’s formal launch, it is expected to gain more visibility and momentum following the official rollout.

Under the policy, some validated first-year students in various universities have already received financial support to cover their tuition fees, bringing President Mahama’s vision for accessible tertiary education to life.

The policy provides upfront tuition support for first-year students enrolled in universities and colleges of education. It also sets the stage for these students to access student loans to fund their education in subsequent years.

President Mahama reiterated his goal to increase the proportion of Ghanaians with university education beyond the current 18%, as reported by the Ghana Statistical Service, through the implementation of the No-Fees-Stress initiative.

He further pledged to increase the value of student loans to cover all academic-related expenses for university students, ensuring comprehensive financial relief throughout their academic journey.

President Mahama, in his address, said the idea for the policy was inspired by the stories of brilliant but needy students he encountered before becoming president.

“These are not isolated stories; these are real stories of people,” he said, emphasizing the urgent need to make tertiary education accessible for all Ghanaians regardless of financial background.

Additionally, at least 19,500 students have received fee reimbursements, according to Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu. The SLTF also confirmed that 19,703 students had received second-semester loans as of July 1.
