The gale of defections from the opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress has continued with the sitting member of the House of Representatives representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency of Enugu State, Sunday Umeha, dumping the Labour Party for the APC.

Also, a former Rep member for Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency of Cross River State, Daniel Asuquo, alias “Dansuki,” defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC.

In Enugu, Umeha officially announced his defection to the APC during a mini-rally held on Saturday at Ibagwa-Aka, Igboeze South Local Government Area.

The event saw a significant political shift as a prominent business mogul and major financier of the LP in Igboeze South,Chief Joshua Ogbonna, popularly known as “Father Father”, led over 1,000 party members, including the entire local government structure of the LP, into the APC.

Although the rally was held outside his constituency, Umeha explained that he attended in solidarity with his friend, Ogbonna.

He disclosed that a formal rally to mark his official entry into the APC in his own local government, Ezeagu, would be held in the coming days.

Umeha, who becomes the first elected APC representative in Enugu State since the party’s inception in 2014, revealed he had already resigned from the Labour Party and registered as an APC member in his ward.

He attributed his defection to persistent internal crises within the LP at both state and national levels.

He further stated that aligning with the ruling APC would enable his constituents to better connect with the Federal Government and benefit from national development initiatives.

Representing the APC Leader in Enugu and Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, his former governorship running mate, Mr. George Ogara, lauded the influx of credible grassroots politicians into the APC.

“The sheer number of defectors today is unprecedented in the state. This is the beginning of a political revolution. We must remain united to reclaim power and return it to the people,” he said.

Receiving the defectors, the Enugu State APC Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, declared that the party is now primed to take over Enugu’s Government House—the Lion Building—in 2027.

He blamed the PDP’s 26-year dominance for widespread suffering, citing excessive taxation, land grabs, and the demolition of citizens’ properties under the guise of developing motor parks, which he argued should be the responsibility of local governments.

Agballah commended party stalwart Mr. Peter Okonkwo for donating a zonal campaign office in Enugu North and facilitating the collapse of the LP structure in Igboeze South.

“Today marks a historic decampment—entire local government and ward executives, including the LP’s chairmanship candidate in the last council elections, have joined our party,” he said.

He handed over the party’s flag and broom to the defectors, declaring, “With this broom, we will sweep in good governance and sweep away the reactionary forces that have held Enugu hostage for 26 years. APC is ready to take over Enugu in 2027.”

Chief Joshua Ogbonna, speaking on behalf of the defectors, recounted attempts by opponents to frustrate their movement, including the seizure of hired buses, which forced many to resort to commercial motorcycles.

“Over 1,000 of us have defected today. The work has begun—ward by ward. Igboeze South will not come last,” he vowed.

In a similar development in Cross River State, Asuquo announced his defection to the APC.

During a grand reception at the APC Secretariat in Calabar on Saturday, Asuquo stated that the party is now home to a coalition of key former LP and PDP members. He praised Governor Bassey Otu’s people-focused administration, citing its openness, responsiveness, and commitment to grassroots development.

“With the Obedient Movement, formerly under my watch in the LP, now fully collapsed into the APC, and combined with support from PDP defectors, we are confident of delivering 500,000 votes to Governor Otu and President Bola Tinubu in 2027,” Asuquo declared.

He said his decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to collaborate with Governor Otu in advancing the state’s economic potential and improving citizens’ welfare.

“Politics is service, and I present myself for service. This is a moment to give back to my people,” he said.

Cross River State APC Chairman, Alphonsus Eba, commended Asuquo for his principled approach and strict adherence to the party’s entry requirements from the ward level.

“By following due process and registering at your polling unit and ward, you have become a bona fide member of the APC. We are proud to welcome you,” he stated.

The wave of defections from the Labour Party and the PDP into the APC across both states marks a notable shift in political momentum as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
