Love on the Spectrum's James' Mom Addresses His Romance With Shelley, Says She's Cautiously Optimistic
Love on the Spectrum star ’ mom addressed his romance with girlfriend and revealed she is cautiously optimistic as he envisions a bright future together with the senior advertising manager.
“James is talking about this as permanent and long-term and that they’re going to live together,” June Jones said during an appearance on the “Talk to Me Sis” podcast, cohosted by and Nikki Tomlinson, while giving the pair her blessing and seal of approval.
“Being a mom, I don’t want him hurt, so you know, I want to make sure that she feels the same way,” she clarified. “But it’s terrific.”
June said that she loves how “very calming” Shelley is for James, 37, praising her son as a “considerate boyfriend,” and for being attentive. “He always asks her, ‘Is everything OK?’”
James sees himself getting married by the time he’s 40, June shared, adding that James and Shelley are working on their communication to keep their relationship strong. James has been candid on the show about not wanting children.
June explained that sometimes James tends to “blurt out things without thinking,” which can unintentionally hurt Shelley’s feelings but they are working through it.
After becoming a breakout star on Love on the Spectrum, June said that he has also been learning to navigate his newfound fame quite well.
“He’s just blossomed so much through this,” June said. “It’s been, like, the best thing ever.”
Fans watched as the couple became boyfriend and girlfriend at the end of the season 3 finale.
“She reached out to me online because she actually had seen me,” James told People about how they first formed a bond. “She’d watched the show before, so I’m very glad that she did it. She reached out to me and we’d been communicating.”
James and Shelley are still going strong today, having recently celebrated their one-year anniversary. She marked the special occasion by sharing a throwback video from their first date in 2024, showing him rocking the stage while doing karaoke.

When fans referred to James as her “soulmate,” Shelley gushed over their relationship and replied, “I have never met anyone I feel so deeply connected to. He understands parts of me that I did not even know needed understanding. I am my happiest when I am with him.”
James has been open about having Asperger’s syndrome, which is part of the broader range of neurological disorders on the autism spectrum. “I am autistic and my life is not a tragedy,” Shelley also shared via a TikTok video.
“Autism has definitely made my life harder, but it’s something that shouldn’t be told that we need to prevent,” she explained. “It’s something that we should accept and understand in society. Autistic people are not broken. They just think differently.”
James previously spoke out about his journey to finding love with Netflix’s Tudum and sang her praises.
“Shelley is simply wonderful and amazing,” James said in April. “I love her very much, since she and I have much in common, but we also bring out the best in each other and inspire each other to grow and improve as people. I am so very glad that she and I have met!”
