Live sex, explicit material on TikTok completely unacceptable - Sam George
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has condemned the increasing volume of sexually explicit content on TikTok, describing it as “completely unacceptable” and inconsistent with Ghanaian cultural values.
Speaking at a ministerial press briefing in Accra on July 3, 2025, Mr. George revealed that the government formally engaged TikTok’s West African government relations team on June 26 to address growing concerns over user safety and content regulation on the platform.
“I’m deeply concerned about some of the content on TikTok. Live sex and explicit material on TikTok is completely unacceptable and against our culture and our norms. These were part of the conversations I held with TikTok’s team to ensure content moderation in-country,” he pointed out.
He stated that the government has requested TikTok to establish in-country content moderation systems, with locally trained staff tasked with overseeing content to ensure alignment with Ghana’s cultural and legal standards.
Additionally, Mr. George proposed the development of a local content governance framework tailored to meet national regulatory expectations.
He stressed that protecting minors and vulnerable users online remains a top priority.
Mr. George further disclosed that the Cybersecurity Authority has been directed to collaborate with TikTok in monitoring content, identifying offensive accounts, and ensuring such accounts are permanently removed.
Highlighting a positive step, he commended TikTok’s recent rollout of a STEM-focused content feed and encouraged further collaboration with Ghana’s “One Million Coders” programme to enhance digital literacy among the youth.
He also urged TikTok to fairly compensate Ghanaian content creators, emphasising that their contributions significantly drive global engagement on the platform.
