Don't serve as arbiters of technicalities - Mahama tells new Supreme Court Justices

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the newly appointed justices of the Supreme Court to go beyond procedural technicalities and focus on delivering real and accessible justice to Ghanaians.

Speaking at the official swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, President Mahama urged the seven new justices to see their appointments as a moral and constitutional responsibility that transcends legal interpretation.

“You’re expected to serve not as arbiters of technicalities, but as stewards of justice and conscience,” the President stated. “Yours is not only a legal role, but a moral responsibility to safeguard our constitution’s spirit and interpret it in ways that advance the common good and protect the most vulnerable in our society.”

He reminded the justices of the solemn oath they had taken and encouraged them to uphold integrity, fairness, and impartiality in their rulings.

Describing their appointments as “a high constitutional trust,” the President said the moment marked not only personal achievement but a reflection of national aspirations in a period of governance renewal.

“All of you come onto the Supreme Court with vast experience and a solid knowledge of the law, and are deserving of this high office,” he stated.

President Mahama highlighted the Supreme Court’s role as the final custodian of the law, the guardian of democracy, and the protector of citizens’ rights and freedoms.

“It is to this court that people turn when their freedoms are threatened, when justice seems distant, or when the complexities of modern governance test the Constitution,” he said.
