Lateef Jakande Academy launches Empowerbility Hub

Published 12 hours ago3 minute read

Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy on Wednesday launched an Empowerbility Hub at Ikeja Senior High School, an inclusive school, as part of efforts to provide a digitally equipped, accessible learning environment, where students, regardless of physical ability can thrive.

The Team Lead of the Capstone Group of fellows, Teniola Hassan, stated that her team created the hub to provide a digitally equipped, accessible learning environment, where all students, regardless of physical ability can thrive.

“This initiative speaks directly to the THEMES+ Agenda of Lagos State, especially the Education and Technology, and the “+” which represents inclusion, ensuring no group is left behind.”

Hassan said that aside the hub, it organised a two-day training for teachers focusing on Foundational Strategies for Inclusive Education.

“Our partner from Access Tech introduced us to tools like speech-to-text applications, hearing loops, and the concept of Deaf Architecture where classrooms are designed with clear sightlines and visibility. She also emphasised that sign language should be taught in all schools to bridge the communication gap.”

She stated that on day two, the group had a hands-on session centered on AI and Practical Tools for Inclusive Learning.

“We introduced AI-based resources like real-time captioning apps, interactive whiteboards, and adaptive learning platforms that cater to different learning needs.

“We’ve also installed interactive boards and projectors in every senior class, and trained teachers on how to use them. This is just the beginning. As we receive more funding, we hope to expand our reach and deepen our impact.”

In her goodwill message, the Executive Secretary, Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy said the hub is a bold statement of inclusion, innovation, and impact.

“Through the commitment of our Academy fellows, we’ve created a vibrant, inclusive digital learning environment, equipped with interactive boards and a suite of laptops designed to enhance teaching, personalize learning, and promote equal access for all students.

“But that’s not all. Today, we also mark the official launch of the EmpowerAbility Young Leaders Club—an exciting platform created to nurture the next generation of inclusive, compassionate, and visionary leaders. This club will provide students with the tools, mentorship, and opportunities to lead with empathy and courage in their schools and beyond.

The Director of Admin and HR of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Mrs Omolade Shonubi, said: “This initiative is about inclusion. We are happy that they considered and remembered LASODA. THEMES+ Agenda ensures nobody is left behind. We are happy that LASODA is not left behind in this project. I want to use this opportunity to thank Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy for doing such a large project and including the disability.

As part of efforts to sustain the concept driving the EmpowerAbility Hub, a Young Leaders Club was also launched which align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reaffirm Lagos State’s pledge to equitable education under the THEMES+ Agenda.
