LASEPA secures $225,000 grant to prevent cholera outbreak
Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has secured an intervention grant of $225,000 from the Government of Japan under the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) partnership.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated this, at the ongoing 2025 ministerial briefing to mark the second year of the second term of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Wahab stated the partnership aims to build the capacity of informal food and water vendors and waste workers in the flood-affected Lagos environment to prevent an outbreak of cholera.
“As part of the effort to tackle improper management and disposal of used cooking oil, which poses significant threats to public health, energy, and the environment, LASEPA partnered with Ororo Waste Management Company Limited during the year under review to promote recycling of used cooking oil for wealth creation, a sustainable environment, and public health safety.
“Monitored 140 hospitality facilities, including supermarkets, Nightclubs, and bakeries, to ensure compliance with the state environmental laws on safety and cleanliness Also, 160 abatement notices were served to individuals and organizations violating laws on the indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the lagoon or other water and land pollution forms.
“Through effective monitoring, the Agency ensured that regulatory standards and best practices were efficiently implemented in manufacturing facilities and chemical warehouses across the state.”
This has been instrumental in the reduction of incidents of fire outbreaks and chemical spillage in chemical markets in the state.
“The GM LASEPA led a joint monitoring and abatement exercise at the Ojota chemical market. The visit was conducted with a team from NESREA and the Taskforce on Environmental Protection; the unscheduled visit aimed to monitor compliance with safety regulations, read the Riot Act for non-compliance, and establish grounds for chemical registry at the various markets,” Wahab stated.
